"There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling."

- quote by Mirabel Osler

This year, I'm growing:
  • six Wisconsin 55 tomato plants
  • five cherry tomato plants (goddamn rabbits ate one plant and the marker, so I don't know the exact type)
  • six California Wonder bell pepper plants
  • seven dark green zucchini squash plants
  • 15 Bush Blue Lake 274 green bean plants
  • a smattering of Danvers half long carrots and White Lisbon bunching onions
  • an abundance of Grand Rapids leaf lettuce
  • copious amounts of potted peppermint, lavender, dill, thyme, rosemary, basil, chives, and chamomile
I'd like to document how much produce I harvest this summer.  I think I'm going to exclude the lettuce and herbs from the count though; it would be more difficult to measure the amount harvested, and I've already used quite a bit of the lettuce and each of the herbs.

I planted everything in a roughly 8x10 foot plot back in mid-May, and today was the first "real" (i.e., more than lettuce or herbs) harvest.  I picked nine green beans and one zucchini.  All of the plants are covered with lots of blossoms and tiny veggies.  I think the next few months will be very fruitful.  Pun fully intended in a very literal way.

Bombs Bursting in Air

Oh, sons of bitches.  There's only only one thing poor white people like more than grilling, and that's letting off huge, noisy fireworks in a neighborhood of cheap apartments that are way too close together.  Why are poor white people so patriotic?

S'gonna be a looooooong night.

A Girl Like Me - Part One

Friday, February 25, 2011, I became a woman.

I erroneously thought that I had become a full-fledged woman when I purchased my first pair of Isotoner gloves back in December 2008 (This was my first pair of new gloves since December 1999, so it was a big deal), but now I understand that I was still just a girl until I saw Pete Yorn in concert last Friday in Milwaukee.

la grève

My (very French) French professor ran into the classroom about two minutes after class was supposed to start.

In her husky, heavily accented voice, she breathed, "Ah, I am late.  I am so sorry."  She then pursed her lips and scowled and quickly added, "No.  I am not sorry; I should be on strike!"

It was the most French goddamn thing I've ever heard.

I'm still stressed; here's some more candy.

Pretzel M&M's?!
Meh.  They'll do.  They're basically chocolate-covered pretzels with a higher pretzel-to-chocolate ratio.  My favorite novelty M&M's of all time (Strawberried Peanut Butter) are way better.  Naturally, the almond ones are my favorite "classic" (i.e., non-limited, i.e., original gangster) variety.
